Coast Guard Crew Rescued Dog After Plunge From 300-Foot Cliff
In an incident this week, a dog’s life was saved through the rescue efforts of Coast Guard pilots. The accident occurred in Ecola State Park along the Oregon coast when Leo, a 3-year-old dog, accidentally fell from a 300-foot cliff while walking from his owners.
Local firefighters were already at the scene ready to go down the cliff to help when a U.S. Coast Guard Astoria aircrew arrived in an MH 60 Jayhawk helicopter. With time running out due to high tides, the rescue team quickly lowered a rescue swimmer with a lifting basket to shore. Leo is successfully recovered.
Video captured the moment Liu was rescued as he was lifted into the helicopter and returned to safety on the mainland. The accomplished mission brought relief and joy to all involved as expressed by one of the pilots who was heard in the footage exclaiming “Hugs! Love it.” This incident certainly marked the beginning of the year.
Leo has had an experience. He managed to survive without sustaining serious damage and was eventually reunited with his family.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest, Leo’s owners reported that he spent the night at an emergency vet. They stated, “Leo has cuts and bruises but considering that he is doing well. We are very grateful that he is alive and we expect him to recover.”
We are so happy that Leo is safe and sound! Many thanks to the brave Coast Guard pilots who came to the rescue!
