Experience Merle Haggard’s Soul-Stirring Performance of ‘Silver Wings’ as It Takes You on an Emotional Ride!

Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016) was a renowned American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.

Born in Oildale, California, during the latter part of the Great Depression, Haggard experienced a tumultuous childhood marked by his father’s death and several stints in juvenile detention.

After his release from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he redirected his life and embarked on a lucrative career in country music. He gained fame for his songs that resonated with the working class, often contrasting with the anti-Vietnam War sentiments reflected in much of the popular music of that era.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, Haggard achieved an impressive 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, with many tracks also charting on the Billboard all-genre singles chart. He continued to produce successful albums well into the 2000s.

Shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines
Headed somewhere in flight
They’re taking you away
And leaving me lonely

Throughout his career, Haggard received numerous accolades, including the Kennedy Center Honor (2010), the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), and the BMI Icon Award (2006). He was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1977), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1994), and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (1997).

Haggard passed away on his 79th birthday, April 6, 2016, at his ranch in Shasta County, California, following a battle with double pneumonia.
